A UPS switching to battery is a silent event. Nothing in the room announces it, and in a live production the first sign is often the runtime running out, by which point the decision has been made for you.
A Python service polls every unit over SNMP, and the dashboard shows charge, load and estimated runtime at a glance. The moment a unit transfers to battery it raises a loud alarm.
What matters is the minutes between that transfer and an empty battery: enough to shed load, start a generator, or see the segment through to the end.
Those minutes have been needed twice so far, including at Kuninkuusravit 2025 in Oulu.
