A ranking built on placings answers who has done well. It says much less about who is likely to win a given bout, which is the question a coach, a seeding and the fencer all actually have.

The engine runs Elo and Glicko together over years of épée results: Elo for how sharply a rating should move after a result, Glicko for how uncertain that rating is when someone competes rarely. Around it sit the parts a club uses week to week: tournaments, training, and the record each fencer builds up.

It is measured out of sample: fitted on everything before a date and tested on the bouts that came after it, never on the same bout twice. That is the only evaluation that says anything about the bouts still to come. In use at Turun Miekkailijat, with a wider release planned.
